What is this?

Any idea what this is?
Need a couple clues?
It is in a swampy area
It is NOT excreted by an animal (I know that's what you were thinking)




AND last but not least you CAN eat what comes out of it

      It's a crawfish hole! Guess that's why they call them mud bugs. People here love to eat them, I can't get past the eyes staring at me. Ick
